The recent state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic alliance between the two nations. This partnership has been cultivated over decades, characterized by significant collaboration in political, economic, energy, and cultural domains. Diplomatic relations between the UAE and Germany were established in 1972, and since then, the relationship has flourished, particularly in trade and investment, which have become central to their cooperation. Last year, bilateral trade hit over Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s top trading partner within the Gulf region.
Approximately 2,000 German companies are active in the UAE, including notable names like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The energy sector marks another key area of collaboration, with both countries investing in renewable energy projects, climate action, decarbonization initiatives, and energy security measures. In 2022, an agreement was signed to bolster energy security and industrial cooperation, which includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint ventures focusing on clean energy and climate efforts.
Beyond trade and energy, the partnership extends into research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. Political relations were formally enhanced when a strategic partnership agreement was signed in 2004, encompassing regional security, economic cooperation, and research among other areas. This agreement has further solidified the multifaceted collaboration between the two countries.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the UAE-German relations have remained resilient and continue to grow. Both nations are committed to expanding their cooperation across various strategic sectors, ensuring that their partnership adapts to changing global landscapes and continues to thrive.
