The United States is set to impose new tariffs on certain drones and drone components, with levies reaching up to 100%. This move is part of Washington’s efforts to address national security concerns and reduce its reliance on foreign supply chains heavily influenced by China. The targeted products include unmanned aircraft systems, particularly larger drones weighing over 25 kilograms and those with security-related capabilities such as thermal cameras and docking stations. While these specific drones will face the highest tariff of 100%, smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.
In addition to targeting Chinese imports, the US will also implement tariffs on drones and components from key trading partners. Imports originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff. Meanwhile, products from the United Kingdom will see a 10% tariff, provided that the hardware, software, and technology are sourced from these countries or the US itself. The majority of these tariffs are scheduled to commence on September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are designed to bolster the US defense and industrial base, promote domestic drone manufacturing, and create jobs within the country. By doing so, the US aims to decrease its dependence on overseas suppliers. China is currently a dominant player in the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI holding a substantial share of the US commercial drone sector. This dominance has previously led to US restrictions on DJI over national security issues.
US officials have expressed concerns about the potential risks posed by foreign-made drones, which include surveillance, the collection of sensitive data, and possible attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. The implementation of these tariffs occurs against the backdrop of ongoing trade and technology disputes between the US and China. In response, China has imposed its own restrictions on drone exports to the US and taken actions against several American companies.
