Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport is embarking on an ambitious project to create a 50-kilometer autonomous people mover network. This network is designed to transport passengers efficiently across the vast airport complex through nine initial stations. The construction is slated to conclude by December 2031, setting the stage for the first phase of the airport to open in 2032. Over time, this driverless underground rail system is expected to expand to 14 stations as more phases of the airport come online.
The development aims to establish the world’s largest automated people mover network, surpassing current systems in place at major airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK. Al Maktoum International Airport is designed to eventually accommodate up to 260 million passengers and handle 12 million tonnes of cargo each year. The first phase will feature the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover system, effectively doubling annual passenger capacity to 130 million.
In addition to the internal transit advancements, the airport will benefit from extensive rail connectivity. Plans are in place for an Airport Express Link that will connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport. Future expansions will also include links to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, enhancing accessibility and integration with the wider regional transport network.
As the airport continues to develop, these extensive transport infrastructures are poised to redefine passenger movement and logistics handling on an unprecedented scale. The project’s completion will mark a significant milestone in global airport operations, setting new standards for passenger convenience and operational efficiency in the aviation industry.
