Switzerland has made history by advancing to the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic 4-3 victory in a penalty shootout against Colombia. The match, held after a goalless draw that extended through extra time, was marked by intense competition and missed opportunities on both sides.
Throughout the 120 minutes of regulation and extra time, both teams had chances to break the deadlock, but neither managed to score. Switzerland’s Gregor Kobel was pivotal in keeping the game level during regular play, ultimately becoming the hero of the match by denying Cucho Hernández in the shootout. Colombia’s Davinson Sánchez compounded their woes by hitting the crossbar, setting the stage for Ruben Vargas to secure the winning penalty for Switzerland.
Colombia came tantalizingly close to scoring on several occasions. In the first half, Gustavo Puerta’s effort was superbly saved by Kobel, and Luis Suárez squandered a promising opportunity after halftime. The tension continued into extra time, with Jhon Lucumí’s header clattering off the crossbar and Jaminton Campaz missing a critical late chance that could have sealed the game for Colombia.
Switzerland, too, pressed hard for a goal, with Dan Ndoye, Fabian Rieder, and substitute Djibril Sow all testing Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. However, they were unable to find the net during regulation time.
This victory propels Switzerland into their first World Cup quarter-final since 1954. They are set to face defending champions Argentina in the next round, as they aim to extend their impressive run in this year’s tournament.
